Cheez it

We were just waiting for our pizza to arrive and enjoying another episode of AFV when the big sphere of cheese appeared on screen!

The analyst or researcher whoever it is - looks like a poor fellow you instantly tend to sympathize with in the first shot itself. The sphere of cheese starts making fun of the analyst taking down legitimate notes about how matured the cheese is.

The second shot is even worse when the sphere doesn't let the guy didn't even complete a full sentence..You can see the frustration on the multiple lines he puts in the x mark!!
I and am sure a lot of people found it very funny - just to see that there are some people attempting to analyze how matured the cheese is before they start making baked crackers out of it!!

It leaves quite an impact on you in a way that you tend to laugh on the creativity the director has used to imply a very simple concept in the minds of its target consumer! As soon as the cheese starts talking about stocks and finance etc - bright light starts showing up in the background and instantly the analyst notes that the cheese has got seasoned for the making of the tasty crackers!

I got it in the first go..and guess most of the viewers do..
Its hard to say how many of us will remember the ad just like that 'cos it doesn't leave as much impact as some others do. But one thing is for sure - when (and if) I am looking for cheese crackers in grocery store aisle - I am surely going to notice the Cheez It Snack Crackers before anything else..

Olive Garden

Emphasis on beautiful loving relationships within the family! A concept one can never go wrong while designing a commercial!
Olive Garden came up with this series of commercials showing people sharing all these basic relationships and enjoying them over a Lunch or Dinner @ Olive Garden..
How simple is that!!??

I thought I could pick up 1 that I really liked..but all of them give me a smile whenever they're on air..
The first one I saw was this girl living in a dorm and her parents visiting her there..And while the parents are there they take the daughter and her friends to have a hearty lunch @ Olive Garden..
It was neat..cute and touching..kind of saying - "hey, come over to Olive Garden and you can have a nice meal here with ur teenage daughter forgetting about any/all differences you have"
Wish it happened in real life!

Another one that I loved was the one with 3 generations of ladies going to have a great lunch and catch up! It starts with a dialouge the grand-daughter says about having a fun time with her mom & grand-mom.. It shows how the 3 generations talk..giggle..and perhaps even share an anecdote over & after the lunch at OG!

And now they have come up with this very touching one that has this elderly gentleman with his grand-son having lunch there.. It emphasizes on a young boy treating his grandfather and urging him to order & eat whatever he wants to! The commercial clearly implies without saying in a lot of words that its very easy to have a big hearty lunch without letting out a lot of cash - even for a college kid! In this economy it goes a long way for food lovers !!

The whole series of advertisements have this warm environment of any Olive Garden..the steam erupting out of entrees....a hand or two preparing the latest delicacy there and undoubtedly featuring the warm bread sticks and soup-salad combos!! Anyone who has tasted all of that - would be inclined to go back to the restaurant for few more bites of the warm bread and entrees after seeing this homely commercials on the tell!!
I know I am...especially in this snowy sleety weather...a warm bread & hot soup is calling :-)

Mile Sur Mera Tumhara...Phir Mile Sur Mera Tumhara....

There cannot be a better to time to write a hearty post about the epitome of the Indian advertisement industry..
Once a beautiful example of advertisement - a not-for-profit commercial has been recreated and unveiled today in India that stands to be the 60th Republic Day of our beautiful but developing country!

If you haven't guessed by now - I am talking about the iconic sequence..Mile Sur Mera Tumhara..... that houses all these wonderful celebrities motivating all of us to see our nation's foundation - Unity in Diversity. The original video was created & launched in the year 1988 by Lok Seva Sanchar Parishad. It comprised of famous and not-so-famous people from different parts and walks of the nation sharing the same song under the same blue sky!
It sounds kind of sentimental..but that was the exact notion of the video.. It was made & played as an effort to instill the Unity in Diversity essence in the minds of people . I am really not sure how much it really impacted the people then..But I & my family have always liked watching it. Even as an adolescent, I was touched by the whole video.. Wanted to know who all those people were and what exactly they meant to say - the languages that I had barely heard or understood! Of course, then we didn't have this kind of information (over)flow so didn't have a lot of sources to get the facts.. Today I can.. Can just google and watch the video multiple times or find out exactly who starred in that video then! And it doesn't end over there.. I get to see the newly recreated videos of the same song sitting right here in my living room - with no Indian channels telecast on my TV!! Amazing! But that's a different topic altogther..

Coming back to the original - it was just original! I am not a big fan of recreating things anyways.. Be it movies or books or remixes!!.. Little old-fashioned one might say - But I like it in its original form most of the times!! So it wasn't too much of a surprise when I didn't like the recreation i.e. Phir Mile Sur.... instantly. Of course most part of the song gave me the same goose-bumps the original one used to give me ..But still I feel both the parts of the video lacked the impact..the essence...the overall magic the older one still has! This one feels a lot more commercial to me.. Having Bollywood celebrities in most of the video - it doesn't come right out - which apparently it should ideally!

That's what I think might be the secondary intention of the creators this time.. Having the currently famous Bollywood celebrities on board to give out the message to a larger number of young audience..On another note, I actually appreciate the sentiment (or the commercial aspect) that they brought together a more diverse group of artists in this video.. However what really pained me was the fact that the clips of the Army, Navy, and even Sportsmen were put in the very end of the sequence.. To their justification - I am just glad they had them there atleast!!
It was actually nice to see 2 very popular but very different dancers very effectively promoting the basic notion! I am unsure of the fact why Deepika Padokone was casted - was it because of her father or just because she is hot-favorite amongst the youth these days..
I felt Ranbir Kapoor was there as the mascot of the Kapoor family leading the torch as a 4th generation actor.. Also, I loved Salman Khan's silence clip with the kids..It was so touching..
Having A. R. Rehman, Amitabh Bachchan, Zakir Hussain, Shahrukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Amir Khan etc was so much predictable that it almost sucked! Don't take me wrong - I love Rehman's and Hussain's music and appreciate the biographies of most of the very talented artists..But there were some personalities I felt just lacked the edge for the actual intention! And some were just missing out! I would have loved to see people like Javed Akhtar or Rajnikanth or our writer President A P J Kalam or even the famous Sachin Tendulkar!! I just felt all these very very famous AND influential people were completely absent..which made the video all the way less effective!

(The fact that I've mentioned the same people as most newspapers online is purely coincidental.. I didn't even know so many people were talking (criticizing) it till I published & googled)

I don't want to do a direct comparison with the older version as they can't do much justice along these lines too.. But the fact that even today Bollywood has the most influence on the youth of our country - actually is not a very pleasant thought. Its sad to see that with all the information...changes...and development too - our youth doesn't have very influential role models outside Bollywood!! So given the fact - what can really reach upto the target audience TODAY - I think the creators of this recreation have done quite an OK job!
There is not a doubt in my mind that it does not even closely stand near the original video that is generally referred to as the unofficial anthem of our country! Not the music..Not the people in it..And certainly Not the emotion conveyed!!

However, just as in other parts of life - we should look ahead ..not dwell in the past too much...and Move On!

So here's a Cheer to the Republic of India along with the old & new Mile Sur Mera Tumhara....To Sur Bane Humara!

Happy Republic Day!

The world of Advertisements & TV commercials!

Ever since I was a child, I have been fond of advertisements..Most people find them annoying in the middle of their favorite program.. I do too when I am watching a movie/program very intently.. Yet I like watching these mini-movies put together artistically. For me they are a big deal. Just like for the Advertising industry..they are huge projects to be undertaken very carefully & strategically.. For many others like me - they are not just a promotion selling something. They are these sequences that come up to us & involve us with whatever they are doing/selling. Many of us - like to just notice the commercial's characters ..its way of selling...its music...its dialogue and so on.. And we tend to associate the products we buy and use with these commercials - the way it has been presented/sold to us.  So they are certainly not measly messages but have become a big part of our lives..

Today advertisements are in every zone of the fast-paced life we are living in. The marketing teams want us to notice their products/services anywhere we can put our eyes on...
Be it our cell-phones..bills...shopping carts...banners..beverage napkins...and the list is very long!
But at this moment I am just talking only about TV advertisements..

When I was a kid, those 12-40 second TV  promotions were like wonderful diversions to me..Be it a boring serial on Doordarshan or a meal that I am disliking to my core..
These colorful promotions in the middle of news & serials used to bring in variety of things to our living room.

I am sure most of us can go back & recall a couple of advertisements that tickled us ..or have touched us deeply. Be it the cute Utterly Butterly Delicious - Amul or the healthy hearty Dadaji (Grandfather) in Parle-G...or the bubbly Preity Zinta in the Liril promo dancing her heart out in the waterfall ....or Amir Khan in those funny characters popularizing Coke all over India... We have seen them all.. Does't mean all the advertisements that are telecast are great & funny..Often they are uninteresting and at times ridiculous too! Completely fail to hit the mark on the target audience.. But I feel the good & the better ones often compensate for the not-so-good ones..for us Ad lovers atleast!

For me the Cadbury's Dairy Milk advertisement has to be the one that I loved (and still love) watching..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQBbT4t7l4k  Here's the link ..To cherish once more - for those who love it the way I do..Or to enjoy - for those who haven't seen this one!
Every time I have seen this Ad it brings me a nice big smile! Be it the first smile of the day or one amongst many..
The beautiful enthusiastic girl....the shy cricketer...the annoyed suited gentleman....and the helpless guard....Very very simple things..but a beautiful sequence when put together.. It touched so many of us in our teenage years.. Lot of girls just wanted to buy the Dairy Milk to have it with their boy-friends after their big match!!

I don't know if the design/marketing team was a genius & knew they were catching on the pulse of the youth at that time - or it was just pure luck! But I know (now) that the following advertisements having the same song & multiple cute day-to-day characters was not just luck. It was definitely a campaign.. A heart-warming campaign that touched young & old hearts... And Dairy Milk became a beautiful...romantic...gift & notion from just a simple old chocolate bar!! Don't take me wrong..Its not just words.. Its an awesome chocolate too. After tasting a variety of chocolates here in the US - I can still cherish 1 big bar lovingly & heartily :-)

So once again..I am not here to criticize or make an official statement for any of these commercials.. But just want to share what I notice..observe...feel..like/dislike about them.. I feel my hands are not co-operating with my thoughts.. I have so many commercials I would like to begin with and I feel I am unable to type that fast!!! So I will take it slow..one by one.. and would keep posting my thoughts here on ..enjoying the journey...cherishing the old forgotten ads....and embracing the new ones....From India and Elsewhere... :-)

Till the next posting..my fellow Ad lovers...Enjoy (some of) the above mentioned ads...
